During the official visit of the President of the Slovak republic and his spouse in Ukraine, on 6th October 2010 First Lady met students of the Kiev National University of Taras Shevchenko. At the university land was the First Lady welcomed by the University Vice-Chancellor Mr. Petro Bech. He informed her about particular school activities and stated that the college teaches 30 languages. "We are very grateful that the First Lady visited our university and department of the Slovak language. Students expressed great interest in the language and asked us about its teaching," said the Vice-Chancellor. He added that the market in Ukraine requires interpreters. He firmly believes that in the future there will be a close cooperation in the field of education between Ukraine and Slovakia.

At the Department of Slavic Philology, where the Slovak language is taught as a second language, Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová met the head of department Mrs. Oľga Palamruchuk and 16 students who expressed this year their interest in the Slovak language. As Mrs. Palamruchuk said, "I am glad that now the situation is such that students are interested in Slovak language. Students say that Slovak is a picturesque and beautiful language."

Also with this visit the First Lady supported students in their learning of Slovak language. "I am glad that I could visit you. I am pleased that the Slovak language is interesting for many of you. I know that it´s not an easy language, but I believe you can cover it successfully." Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová donored the Department of Slavic Philology of the Institute of Philology of the University of Taras Shevchenko books about Slovakia and in addition also publications of the Slovak President Mr. Ivan Gašparovič.

Department of Slavic Philology of the Institute of Philology of the University of Taras Shevchenko was founded in 1842. Traditionally were taught Czech, Polish and Serbian language. As a second language were teached other Slavic languages. Today, the department also runs the Czech, Polish, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Belarusian language. Taras Shevchenko University has a long partnership with the Comenius University in Bratislava.

In her program in Kiev the First Lady also visited Taras Shevchenko National Museum, which is one of the largest centers of national culture in Ukraine. In the afternoon she viewed the Cathedral of St. Sofia from the 11th century, which is a World Heritage Site (UNESCO) and is one of the seven wonders of Ukraine.
