On 14th December 2010 First Lady of Slovakia Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová attended the ceremonial session of the Council of the Slovak Chamber of Nurses and Midwives in the seat of the chamber. At the meeting, chamber President Mrs. Mária Lévyová presented the work of the chamber and current problems of nurses in health and social sphere. "We are dealing with many problems, we would really welcome motivational incentives for nurses, as for example teachers have. Nurses are also financially unrecognized. We have already required for setting minimum wages for nurses," said Mrs. Mária Lévyová. Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová is not indifferent to nursing, she personally supports also their events. "I am glad for this visit. I am not indifferent to health, the fact is that through my foundation Education and Health for Everybody we bought several major medical equipment," said the First Lady at a meeting.

In the discussions nurses reported that the profession is becoming less interesting. It can be seen particularly in schools where numbers of students decline. According to them many of students just want to get a title (or a university degree) and then go abroad.

Midwives also presented their work to the First Lady. In Slovakia, there are 21 registered nurses who provide such specific assistance outside of health facilities. Their activities, however, the public knows very little.

Mrs. Lévyová also thanked Mrs. Gašparovičová for her support of nurses and also for the gift from the Education and Health for Everybody foundation – for 4 laptops that chamber intensively uses in assessing the continuing education of nurses and midwives across the country.
