On 12 April 2010 President of the Slovak Republic with his spouse Silvia Gašparovičová at the Embassy of Poland in Bratislava paid tribute with his signature into the condolence book to victims of the tragic plane crash, in which on Saturday the President the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński and his spouse and other important leaders of Poland were killed. President Ivan Gašparovič, together with the First Lady were welcomed at the Polish embassy by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland in Slovakia Mr. Andrzej Krawczyk.

As Ivan Gašparovič said to media representatives, in his inscription he again expressed condolences to the whole Poland, and also added a personal message "goodbye, my friend", because the Polish president and his wife, First Lady of Poland, and the slovak presidential couple knew each other "more than just as politicians“.

Ivan Gašparovič confirmed that he intends to attend personally the funeral of his Polish partner. "Certainly in the funeral of Mr. President I will participate as the Slovak President and will re-express the sincere sympathy from all Slovaks.“ According to him it´s a very hard test for Poland in view of the historical link with the tragic events of World War II in Katyn, where the delegation of Polish president directed. "I remember the tragedy of a number of politicians and policy makers at the international level within the UN, when the aircraft crashed. But such compassion, such feelings with others, in this dimension I cannot remember," - noted the head of state.

Words of deep involvement added also First Lady Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová. "It’s a big tragedy and all of us really sentiment with the whole Poland, with the victims and families of the victims of this tragedy," said the First Lady. "With Mrs. Kaczyński we understood us very well, we had similar activities - charitable, or educational," she said after the condolence. She added with grief, thet according to the call of the international conference in New York on autism both First Ladies preparated a joint project for Slovakia and Poland focused on research and treatment of children autism.

President Ivan Gašparovič also confirmed that after agreement with the Prime Minister Robert Fico his cabinet should declare the national mourning in the Slovak Republic on Saturday - the day of the planned funeral of the Polish President.
