President of Slovakia Ivan Gašparovič with his wife Silvia welcomed on January 12, 2010 in the Presidential Palace in Bratislava representatives of churches and religious societies in Slovakia. At the meeting were also present Marek Maďarič, Minister of Culture, Mons. Mario Giordana, Apostolic Nuncio and Ján Juran, director of the ecclesiastical department of the Ministry of Culture.

At this traditional meeting the Head of State stressed that the New Year meeting with representatives of churches in Slovakia he primarily sees as a sign of long-term good relations between the state and churches and religious societies, but also among representatives of churches and the state. He appreciated the important role played by the church to create a healthy social climate in a moral society.

For the leaders of the Catholic Church in Slovakia thanked for inviting Msgr. Stanislav Zvolenský. On behalf of the representatives of the Ecumenic Council of Churches in Slovakia expressed thanks the General Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Augsburg Confession Mr. Milos Klátik as well as the honorary chairman of the Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Slovakia Mr. Pavel Traubner.

A common ecumenical prayer for Slovakia was held at the end of the meeting in the Chapel of St. Barbara at the Presidential Palace.
