President Ivan Gašparovič and his wife Silvia visited on 23th March 2011 the Japanese Embassy in Bratislava in order to enroll in the condolence book in the context of the devastating earthquake that had tragic consequences for the country and its people.

"It’s a tragedy that happened in Japan, but it is also a tragedy of all humanity. It is remarkable how the Japanese are able to bear the elemental tragedy that befell their country, how they can help each other," said the president.

The devastating earthquake in Japan and subsequent tsunamis have requested so far about 9000 victims and there are still many people missing. Earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck large areas and caused enormous damage in Fukushima Prefecture, to which was added the nuclear threat from nuclear power plant Fukushima damaged by an earthquake.
