President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič and his spouse Silvia started on 26 June 2012 the official visit to Japan in the region of Sendai, which was last year hit by devastating tsunamis. They personally inspected the place, where till March 2011 stood houses and people were living their normal lives. Presidential couple visited the reconstructed Sendai airport, the devastated city of Ishinomaki and in the Kadonowaki city they laid a bouquet at the memorial place of the destroyed primary school, where dozens of children died. Then they visited the newly built primary school in Kadonowaki, where students showed their musical talent.

"A lot of people still supports us and thanks to them we can continue to teach our children. Your visit gives us proof that the world can join together," said the headmaster Etsumi Saito. The Slovak presidential couple handed over a check for 10,000 euros to the Kadonowaki school headmaster.

The undersea earthquake in March 2011 with a magnitude of 9.0 struck the coast of Japan up to 10 km inside the territory. Till March 2012 15,854 dead and more than three thousand missing people were confirmed. Nearly 130,000 buildings were destroyed by torrential tsunami, which amounted to 40 meters.

Ivan Gašparovič and Silvia Gašparovičová met also with compatriots living in the region and then they flew to Tokyo.
