On the occasion of the traditional New Year’s meeting on 5th January 2009 in the Presidential Palace the presidential couple welcomed representatives of church and religious communities in Slovakia. This traditional event visited also Mr. Augustín Jozef Lang, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, Mr. Ján Juran, director of the churches department of the MC, and Mons. Mario Giordana, the apostolic nuncio.

As Mr. Gašparovič said, he considers this meeting as a chance to pay society´s attention to spiritual values. The First Lady wished all of them many fortitude for their hard and very needed work in the New Year.

For the guests – representatives of church and religious communities – thanked Mons. František Tondra, see bishop of Spiš and chairman of KBS, Mr. Ján Semjan, chairman of the Ecumenical Board of Churches and deputy bishop of the Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, as well as Mr. Pavel Traubner, honourable chairman of the Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Slovakia.

This meeting attended also Carollers of the Good News from Trnava, Šáša and Zakamenné who wished all of them good health, luck and God´s blessing for the New Year. They visited the Presidential Palace for the 8th time and as Mr. Martián Čaučík, chairman of the Movement of the Christian Communities, said the carollers gained till now more than 21 million SKK. Through humanitarian and development projects the Good News helped children inUganda, Kenya and South Sudan.

At the end of the meeting an ecumenic prayer for Slovakia was hold in the St. Barbara chapel of the Presidential Palace.
