Education and helping others – that are some fields that the First Lady of Slovakia Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová and the First Lady of Syria Mrs. Asma al-Assad have in common. During the official visit of the Syrian president with his spouse in Slovakia on April 29, 2009, Mrs. Gašparovičová welcomed Mrs. al-Assad in the Golden Room of the Presidential Palace.

First Lady of Syria was interested in activities of the Slovak Foundation of Silvia Gašparovičová – Education and Health for Everybody, especially in those concerning education. Mrs. Gašparovičová familiarized Mrs. al-Assad with the project First Folk Academy, n.o. „One of the reasons why we decided to do this project was the fact that we have seen defaults in education of medically handicapped and social weaker groups. The education process follows especially in regions with a high unemployment rate. Graduates of the three-months course get PC skills, basics of English and can orientate oneself at the labour market,“ said Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová.

During the spouses´ programme both First Ladies visited children in the Primary School for tender-eyed and blind children at Svrčia-street in Bratislava. The small pupils showed their english skills. Some minutes with the interactive board spent also Mrs. Asma al-Assad. Mrs. Gašparovičová´s foundation buyed special software for this interactive board – CD´s with teaching materials for each subject. „Why is English so essential?“ – asked the syrian First Lady children in the classroom. She also recognised their work: „The future of Slovakia is in good hands – because you can see the future of a nation on children and youth. Dear teachers, it´s great to see your work and your human approach to children. It´s you who gives children the hope for making oneself countable in the society.“
