Within the official visit of the President of the Slovak Republic to Portugal, 24 – 26 October 2005, First Lady Silvia Gašparovičová met the Director of the Ricardo do Espiríto Santa Silva Foundation in Lisbon, Mrs. Vanessa Salgado, who informed her about the mission and activities of the Foundation. The Foundation had been established to support traditional crafts, and to train young artistic craftsmen who can improve their skills and abilities in the workshops of the Foundation under experts’ supervision. In addition to the museum of the Foundation, the First Lady also visited the arts workshops and talked to young students. Silvia Gašparovičová, whose Foundation supports projects of education and health as well as socially oriented projects, initiated a meeting with representatives of the largest Lisbon social organization called Santa Casa da Misericórdia. This organization devotes to children, health handicapped people, old people and people in need. Talking to Rui Cuhn, Silvia Gašparovičová showed her interest in the activities of the organization and methods of financing its social programs. Among others, she was informed about the interesting and inspirational main way of financing the Santa Casa activities, namely the revenues of lotteries. The meeting with the Santa Casa Director was followed by a visit to a children’s home, where the Slovak First Lady, being accompanied by a member of the Santa Casa Executive Board, presented the children nice toys.
