Summit in Madrid shows clear signal of cooperation

Summit in Madrid shows clear signal of cooperation

President Zuzana Čaputová completed her participation in the NATO Summit in Madrid on Thursday 30 June 2022. The summit was of historical significance due to the adopted decisions.

The final day of this summit completed the series of important decisions from recent days and weeks at the European Council and from the meeting of the leaders of the G7 states where the democratic world showed its unity. "We are standing on common values and Slovakia is in this sense in a good club and on the right side. We are sending a clear signal of help to Ukraine, a clear signal of the fact that we will stand up to all threats to our security, and especially a clear signal of cooperation."

Slovakia significantly participated in the preparation of several of these decisions, including the strengthening of our defence and that of the Alliance. The agreement on the membership of Finland and Sweden in the Alliance was another of the outcomes from the summit in Madrid. These two countries decided to become part of our defensive community and to share collective defence after years of neutrality, even 200 years in the case of Sweden. "I consider this to be a telling message about the importance of NATO. We also adopted a new strategic concept of the Alliance which openly names the threats and challenges we are facing and explains how we will react to these challenges, which includes enhancing our own defensive capacities. We are fully aware of the complicated times we are living in and how important it is to build good relations among us and our countries. I am pleased that this moment was also fulfilled by participating in this summit."
