President speaks at the Crimea Platform online summit

President Čaputová joined the Crimea Platform online summit on Tuesday 23 August 2022.

In her speech, the president again expressed the support of Slovakia for Ukraine and declared that Russia must end its illegal invasion and occupation. “Ukraine’s struggle is justified. It is a fight of people who want to live in peace, freedom and democracy. It is a fight for the future of Ukraine. We will continue supporting you in your striving.”

The president also noted Russia’s abuse of Crimea, because it uses that territory to attack the rest of Ukraine, damage local unique ecosystems and cultural heritage.
This second summit of the Crimea Platform was opened by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while almost 60 world leaders, including representatives of the G7, EU, NATO states and several states from Asia, Africa and Latin America joined him.  In addition to the President of the Slovak Republic, the following leaders also spoke at the summit: Polish President Andrzej Duda, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In their joint declaration, the leaders stated that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be fully respected. They called upon Russia to immediately end its occupation of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol and to respect the human rights of all people of this peninsula, including ethnic Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars and to end the persecution of those who disagree with Crimea's illegal occupation.
