Israel President Isaac Herzog visits Slovakia

Israel President Isaac Herzog visits Slovakia

At the invitation of President Čaputová, Israeli President Isaac Herzog arrived on Monday, 4 September 2023, for an official visit to Slovakia. The President emphasized that the visit was symbolically carried out in the year when Israel commemorates its 75th and Slovakia its 30th anniversary.

"Diplomatic relations between our countries have been functioning for three decades, but people-to-people contacts have lasted much longer. At one time, many of our citizens, fleeing from the horrors and shameful inhumanity of the local martial law, found a new home in your country. Many of them joined the Slovak National Uprising. Many of them are still proud of their Slovak origin, and we are just as proud of them."

The heads of state mainly discussed cooperation in the field of energy, specifically the diversification of gas supplies for Slovakia, where Israel is a promising partner. "We also want to strengthen our cooperation in science, defence, IT, and technology."

In connection with the domestic political situation in both countries, the president noted that both Slovakia and Israel are facing the radicalization of part of the political spectrum.

"The protection of democracy on the part of all democratically minded citizens is all the more necessary. Israel has a long tradition of democracy, and it is precisely there that an intensive discussion about the form of judicial reform is taking place. From our own experience, we know that justice will be strengthened if changes in the judiciary are based on the principles of the rule of law, the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary."

The heads of state also touched on the situation in our regions, including the effects of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

"Israel, like Slovakia and more than 140 other countries of the world, condemned this attack at the UN. We also talked about settling relations between Israel and Palestine. For Slovakia, as well as for the rest of the EU, the so-called two-state solution remains the basis. Both Israelis and Palestinians deserve to live in peace, stability and prosperity, and it is important that all parties take steps to de-escalate tensions."
