On Tuesday, 15 November 2005, Silvia Gašparovičová greeted the participants of the conference on „Violation against Women as a Problem of Public Policy”, being held under her auspices. She underlined the fact that organizing this conference meant that the joint project of the Institute of Public Issues and the Philip Morris company continued. In the first stage of the project a study titled „Violation against Women as a Problem of Public Policy“ was published. In addition, she expressed her belief that organizing this conference did not mean that the project had come to its end.

„I was pleased to hear that in August the Government approved the National Action Plan for Prevention and Elimination of Violation against Women. A complex solution to this issue requires a systematic approach and involvement of all relevant institutions. It is the first precondition to meet objectives of fighting domestic violation. Fulfilment of these objectives requires a coordinated approach with a clear programme interconnecting all the entities that come into contact with the problem: offices of the state administration, local governments, NGOs, representatives of various professions and specializations. The coordination including the international level may also be very fruitful. Slovakia could thus join international cooperation within the European Union. I am very glad, therefore, that in addition to Slovak experts, also experts from the neighbouring countries of Austria and the Czech Republic came to the conference to share their experience with us.

I am fully aware of the gravity of this problem.Through my Foundation of Education and Health for Everybody I would like to contribute to solving it. I am namely convinced that education and knowledge play an important role in it. Within my Foundation, I will initiate and support any activities aimed at this serious all-society issue. In cooperation with other organizations, my ambition is to help build a crisis centre for abused women. I believe that we will succeed in it with my colleagues from the Foundation“, said the First Lady in her speech.
