On Thursday 4 May 2006, Silvia Gašparovičová attended the celebration of the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day held under her auspices. The event was organized by the Slovak Red Cross in the Mirrors Hall of the Primate’s Palace in Bratislava. Several dozens of blood donors, long-time staff members of the Slovak Red Cross as well as some people who did not hesitate to risk their lives to save lives of others were awarded at the ceremony.
„In today’s world willingness to help is unfortunately not always so common, as we all know. It is also our fortune that you, in your work, focus on what makes a man a man. It is the sensitivity to problems of others, solidarity and specific help to people in need. You certainly more than deserve the awards you will get today. But I am convinced that the most import reward for you is to know that you helped somebody, that you mitigated or completely eliminated suffering of somebody. Stay as you are, keep giving hope to people because this is probably the greatest gift people can give each other,“ said the First Lady when addressing the awarded. Together with President of the Slovak Red Cross Mrs. Helena Kobzová and Honorary President of the Slovak Red Cross Mrs. Emília Kováčová, the First Lady gave the Slovak Red Cross Medal for Saving Life to five citizens who by their determined and effective interventions while risking their own lives offered the first aid to people in immediate threat to life..
In the afternoon, the delegation was received also by President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič in the Presidential Palace. The First Lady was of course not missing.
