On Thursday, 16 February 2006, Silvia Gašparovičová started the project of the First People’s Academy in Sobrance. It is a project of the Slovak Foundation of Silvia Gašparovičová – Education and Health for Everybody. The project was designed as a model of systematic education of medically and socially handicapped citizens. The aim of the project is to help these people to increase their qualification, and subsequently to have a better chance to succeed in real life. In 2004, the Foundation started the education project titled the First People’s Academy in Kežmarok.
It plans to gradually extend the project to other regions of Slovakia as well, in particular those having a high rate of unemployment. In Sobrance, the project was initiated by Mayor Štefan Staško who offered the Foundation of the First Lady cooperation with the municipality and the Work Force Office. Twenty five selected participants will attend a six-month theoretical and practical course titled Education and Preparation for Business and Employment. The main idea of the project is not only to train the trainees but also to help them, in cooperation with local businesses and companies, to get employed and succeed in the labour market.
„When I was here – in the eastern-most Slovak town – with my colleagues from the Foundation last year, I promised the Mayor of Sobrance that I would do everything possible to help your region. I know that the situation in the labour market is not easy, and that the high rate of unemployment affected especially the regions of Eastern Slovakia. I want to thank everybody who has supported the project and helped to put it in place. I am fully convinced that when we join our efforts, we will implement the project successfully,“ said the First Lady her address to the audience.
