Discussing the level of infrastructure development between Slovakia and Poland, the Slovak President said: “There are outstanding issues as regards completion of transport interconnections and in the energy sector.” The President added he believed that the soon-to-be completed Svrčinovec-Skalité section of the Slovakia’s D3 motorway section would successfully connect to the S 69 expressway in Poland. “Possibilities should also be sought to use European funds to finance the road transport infrastructure development,” he noted.
In the historical premises of the Červený Kláštor monastery, the two presidents also discussed cross-border cooperation and tourism development in the Tatras and Orava regions. “We are now in the situation when our [Slovak-Polish] cooperation is predominant in the Visegrad Four group’s efforts, and deserves to be followed by other partners as well,” Ivan Gašparovič said.
Polish President Bronisław Komorowski emphasised during the talks it would be good if we could take advantage of the possibilities this region had to offer and promote it together. “I am very happy that a progress has been made towards the construction of the Bielsko-Biała - Žilina motorway connection,” President Komorowski added. In his opinion, the construction of road infrastructure is important for our joint candidacy to organise a Winter Olympics.
Also, the signing of a document on the construction of a gas interconnector has moved to its final stage in Poland.
The two presidents also discussed the EU’s Eastern Partnership initiative and Ukraine’s European prospects. They talked about EU’s cooperation with Ukraine which should result in the signing of an Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius in November 2013.
Ivan Gašparovič and Bronisław Komorowski ended their official working meeting by sailing a raft down the Dunajec River, from Slovakia’s Červený Kláštor to Szczawnica in Poland.
