First Lady Silvia Gašparovičová took patronage of the World Heart Day, annually organized in September following the initiative of the World Heart Federation. The main theme of the 2005 World Heart Day is an appeal to have a healthy weight and a healthy life style, which means to have a healthy heart for life.
The aim of the Heart World Federation is to promote preventive measures and thus to reduce the number of cases of cardiovascular diseases and improve life of all the population of 192 countries of the world associated in the Federation.
By her direct attendance on 28 September 2005, Silvia Gašparovičová actively promoted the presentation of the activities of the Heart to Heart Slovak League with the Slovak Cardiovascular Society. The purpose of the presentation was to introduce the prevention program for cardiovascular diseases.
During the discussion within the Open Door Day of the World Heart Day, Silvia Gašparovičová expressed her support for any program for improving the health situation of the population in Slovakia and worldwide. Already on taking the patronage of the World Health Day, she advocated programs of healthy life style in the capacity of the First Lady. Moreover, she promised a very active participation also as the President of the Education and Health for Everybody Foundation whose one of the main mission is to support health for everybody.
Also on this forum, Silvia Gašparovičová addressed an urgent task to intensify programs of healthy diet and habits, including the increase in awareness of physical activities of school children, whereby the state should be the main advocate. Without the principal involvement of state authorities, every activity, even the best ones, organized by professional associations, foundations, leagues or world federations will miss its aim.
Silvia Gašparovičová recommended joining capacities to provide for a success of efficient programs to improve the health conditions of the society, and cooperating between various sections of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, as Slovakia does not rank very well in statistics, being in the second half of World Heart Federation member states. This is a rather alarming result, and at the same time it is a challenge for the whole society to do something fast to achieve a turning point.
