February 20, 2006

President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič received Head of the Office of the Russian Federation Government and Co-Chairman of the Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation Sergei Jevgenevich Naryshkin. During their discussions, President Ivan Gašparovič underlined the high quality of mutual relations of the two countries in the political as well as economic, cultural and scientific fields. He also thanked the Russian party for its support in voting about Slovakia’s candidacy to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Sergei Naryshkin conveyed the head of state the greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin, and appreciated the dynamic development of bilateral relations, in particular in the economic area. The Head of the Office of the Russian Federation Government also referred to the areas of industry and special technologies as the areas of very promising future.
One of the key areas of the Slovak-Russian cooperation is power industry and supplies of power components, whereby Sergei Naryshkin declared an interest in stronger support of these trends by banking houses.

The partners also talked about the Cyclotron Centre as an example of successful cooperation, and they agreed on a possibility of cooperation in third countries too.
In connection with the issue of power industry, President Ivan Gašparovič mentioned that his opinion of privatizing the Slovenské elektrárne power company is not corresponding with the opinion of the Slovak Government, as he advocates of keeping the Slovenské elektrárne in the hands of the state.
