Successful Results of the Working Visit of the President of the Slovak Republic to the USA
President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič with his wife completed his working visit to the United States of America. In New York, he attended the 2005 United Nations summit and the 60th UN General Assembly. President Ivan Gašparovič presented the opinion of the Slovak Republic regarding the questions discussed at the UN Plenary Session during the summit, and the General Debate of the 60th UN General Assembly. In the United Nations Organization, the President of the Slovak Republic defended also the candidacy of the Slovak Republic for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The long-time initiative of the Slovak side is likely very much to result in several days in a successful adoption of the Slovak Republic for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2006 - 2007. Moreover, the President of the Slovak Republic attended several other events in the UN headquarters, such talks on finances and development, the summit of Francophone countries or the UN Democracy Fund summit organized by the President of the USA and the UN Secretary General. The New York programme of the President of the Slovak Republic included also bilateral meetings with the 60th UN General Assembly President, Jan Eliasson, with President of the Hungarian Republic László Sólyom and President of the Moldavian Republic Vladimir Voronin as well as meetings with representatives of the Slovak community organized on the eastern coast of the USA. Then the President of the Slovak Republic with the Slovak delegation visited Seattle, Washington, where he officially opened the Honorary Consulate of the Slovak Republic and discussed the possibilities of cooperation with the Boeing Corporation. In Los Angeles he talked to the representatives of the City and the Supervisory Board of Los Angeles. President Ivan Gašparovič also visited the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and met with the representatives of the Slovak community organized on the western coast of the USA. At the end of his USA programme, Ivan Gašparovič delivered a speech as the honorary guest of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council whose members are international leaders, policymakers and experts in business, science, education and diplomacy.
