Ivan Gašparovič receives the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič received Jan Hamáček, the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, in Bratislava on Wednesday. The Slovak President congratulated Hamáček on his election for the office and appreciated the above-standard relations with the Czech Republic. “The Czech Republic is an excellent neighbour and friend to Slovakia. We share common values, history, cultural traditions and numerous interests,“ Ivan Gašparovič said.

According to the Slovak President, further development of bilateral relations with the Czech Republic is an ongoing priority under our foreign policy. Economic cooperation is our key agenda. The Czech Republic is Slovakia's second largest trade partner (following Germany) and the fifth largest foreign investor. However, there is still room for improvement in this respect, according to the Slovak head of state. Bilateral trade exchange exceeded EUR 14.5 billion in 2012, which is more than that with Poland and Hungary taken together. For the first eight months of 2013, it amounted to EUR 9.6 billion, with Slovakia posting a surplus balance.

"I am glad we are able to maintain close cultural and personal contacts between our nations. We appreciate every initiative to preserve and foster solidarity between our countries," the President noted.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech parliament confirmed that, by his visit to Slovakia, he wished to continue the tradition that the first foreign visit of a newly elected Chamber of Deputies president is to Bratislava."
He informed the Slovak head of state about the formation of a new Czech government and about recent developments in the Czech Republic since the last year's parliamentary election.
“Slovakia appreciates the high quality of care the Czech Republic provides to Slovak citizens who have permanent or temporary residence in the Czech Republic, including Slovak students," President Gašparovič said. More than 22,000 Slovaks study at Czech schools.

The two officials also discussed recent developments across the European Union, and the current situation in Ukraine.
