During the recent official visit of the President Ivan Gašparovič and his wife in the Russian Federation (6-11 November 2006) was the First Lady Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová awarded by a significant appreciation in the form of the decoration Order of Catherine the Great, First Class, No. 15. The high honor she received on the soil of the Slovak Embassy in Moscow "in order of merit and a great contribution to the development of relations and cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Slovak Republic".

The honour was awarded to our First Lady due to her big involvement in developing the teaching of Russian language in slovak schools. Silvia Gašparovičová is the patron of the Slavic Gymnasium with teaching of Russian language to the fullest extent. The school organizes exchanges of students and teachers, during which students live in Slovak and Russian families, where they can learn about cultural and social environment and citizens of another country. First Lady takes patronage and actively cooperates at Russian-Slovak cultural events and also with the Russian community in Slovakia. The Commission also welcomes the very active approach of the First Lady to social and economic life of both countries.

Russian high state honors for significant women in the social life is for Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová even more valuable due to the fact, that this kind of honors received so far only fifteen international personalities; among them important personalities of science, art and politics. Margaret Thatcher was the first one who received the Order of Catherine the Great, and the next holder of this order should become the Finnish President Tarja Hallonen.
