President Komorowski thanked Ivan Gašparovič for his contribution to the development of Polish-Slovak bilateral relations during the ten years of his term in the presidential office.
The two officials also appreciated the level and development of cross-border cooperation. Poland is the third largest trade partner to Slovakia, with a total bilateral turnover of EUR8.1 billion.
The presidents also discussed recent developments in Ukraine. “The situation in Ukraine shows that the old security threats are not history,” the Slovak head of state said. They both agreed that Ukraine would need to have its domestic political conditions stabilised. President Gašparovič reiterated Slovakia was ready to help Ukraine in all areas, adding that the signing of a memorandum on reverse gas deliveries to Ukraine had been the first step in this regard.
Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski recalled Poland’s interest in organising a Winter Olympics in Krakow and the Tatras region. According to Ivan Gašparovič, “a joint organisation of the Olympics would bring several benefits to our countries; therefore, Slovakia endorses this idea.”
Ivan Gašparovič also met with Marshal of the Polish Senate Bogdan Borusewicz. They both appreciated the excellent level of Slovak-Polish relations. The key topic on their agenda was the bilateral cooperation in economy and energy.
On the second day of his official visit, the Slovak President visited Gdansk and Krynica Morska.
