President Ivan Gašparovič paid a visit to Moscow to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II. During the visit to Moscow, he met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
Mr. Gašparovič discussed with Mr. Medvedev his recent visit to Bratislava on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Slovakia’s capital.
According to Mr. Gašparovič, celebrations on the occasion of the end of World War II are of great importance. “To remind us not only of what all the people had to go through, and how many fell in the fight against fascism, but also the fact of the large amount of money being currently spent on armaments and all the things the money could be spent on during peacetime,” the President said. Unfortunately, “even today, we have to be cautious,” Mr. Gašparovič pointed out.
The celebrations were attended by many world leaders. Top Russian officials and 21 leaders of foreign countries, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Chinese President Hu Jintao and Israeli President Shimon Peres, laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin Wall.
