On Monday, Silvia Gašparovičová received representatives of the non-profit organization Little Sun Centre (Centrum Slniečko). Since long, this organization has been involved in dealing with problems of abused and maltreated children and victims of domestic violence. The World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse was declared by the World Women Summit in Geneva in 2000, to be annually commemorated on 19 November. The non-profit organization Centrum Slniečko is the main coordinator of the activities in Slovakia within the world campaign aimed at preventing child abuse. Every year, the Centre organizes several events and one of them is a graphic arts competition devoted to the topic of children’s rights. From selected paintings, the children will build pyramids in entrance halls in public buildings throughout Slovakia, and at an exactly determined time they will light candles at both sides of the pyramids to commemorate child victims of domestic violence. Today, the children of the elementary school in Palisády in Bratislava built such a pyramid in the Presidential Palace. They were welcomed there by the First Lady.
„Childhood should be the nicest period of one’s life. A child should be given an unlimited amount of love from its parents so that the child could get the basis and the scale of values for future life. I believe that a majority of children get this love, even though we relatively often have to cope with the problem of abusing children, in particular through media news of sad cases of an under-nourished or hurt child, brought to hospital, or even a child maltreated to death“, said Silvia Gašparovičová addressing the children who presented her a letter too. Finally, they all together with the President of the Slovak Republic, who joined this solemn meeting too, observed minute’s silence for the victims of child abuse.
