At the occasion of celebrating the World Day of Red Cross and Red Crescent on 5th May 2011 in the Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace in Bratislava Slovak Red Cross volunteers, professional staff, supporters and partners, or those who saved the lives of other people were appreciated.

The highest honor awarded by the Slovak Red Cross (SRC) since its inception in 1993 – the "Silver Medal of Honour of Henry Dunant", got this year the spouse of the President of the Slovak Republic Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová, who is also the Honorary President of the SRC. "Thank you very much for your appreciation. I am glad that also I can be part of the activities of the Slovak Red Cross. Personally, I support contributory blood donations and participate in many educational events that are of major importance for the society," said the First Lady. At the same time she added that she is a member of the SRC since 1948.

According to SRC President Mrs. Helen Kobzová, "First Lady has long shown interest in the SRC activities, she promotes our activities in Slovakia and abroad, develops the care of blood donors through her foundation. Therefore, it is a great honor for us to give her this award."

Silver Medal of Honour of Henry Dunant took from the hands of the First Lady of Slovakia also Mrs. Elena Hrbčová, who has deep social conscience and sense of her life is the support and empathy towards the suffering people. For many years she´s active in the local SRC branch in Ľubel and is the President of the SRC local association in Liptovský Mikuláš.

The Slovak Red Cross also praised the work of its members and volunteers, who over the past year did not hesitate to risk their health or deploy their own lives to save the lives of others. From the First Lady´s hands took the Medal of the Slovak Red Cross for Lifesaving Mr. Pavol Bugoš, Mr. Marcel Skyba and Mr. Patrik Masácov.

On the occasion of the European Year of Volunteering, the SRC decided to reward exceptional people who with volunteer activities actively contribute to the improvement of activities beneficial to society. The award won Mrs. Mária Ondrušková, who is a member of the Red Cross since 61 years, as well as Mr. Ladislav Valiska Timečko and Mrs. Marcela Vincová.

At the end of the meeting First Lady thanked everyone for their dedicated work. "For your future high human work, I wish you good health, satisfaction in job and family and a lot of strength in meeting the objectives for the good of others." Celebration of the World Day of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the associated valuation personally attended also Minister of Health Mr. Ivan Uhliarik.
