Official Visit of President Gašparovič And His Wife to Vietnam
President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič with his wife Silvia and the delegation including a group of Slovak businessmen paid official visits to the Republic of Singapore and the Socialistic Republic of Vietnam from 11 to 19 October 2006.
Both visits were historically first visits ever of the President of the Slovak Republic to these countries. In Vietnam, the President met with the highest Vietnamese representatives – President Nguyen Minh Triet, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong, and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. Their talks were focused on developing economic cooperation in chemical industry, health care and tourism. The Vietnamese hosts took vivid interest in possibilities of Slovak investments in Vietnam. The programme of the visit included also signing an agreement between the governments of Slovakia and Vietnam on mutual lifting visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports and on facilitation of issuing visas for holders of service passports. Economy Minister of the Slovak Republic Ľubomír Jahnátek and Trade Minister of Vietnam Truong Dinh Tuyen signed an agreement on economic cooperation between the Slovak Republic and the Socialistic Republic of Vietnam.
President Ivan Gašparovič also attended the Slovak-Vietnamese Economic Forum. Then he visited Ho Chi Minh City where he, before completing his official visit, opened the honorary consulate of the Slovak Republic.
