At the traditional New Year meeting on 24 January 2008 Mr. Ivan Gašparovič together with his spouse Silvia welcomed representatives of 12 national minorities living in Slovakia. This event attended also Mr. Dušan Čaplovič, vice-president of the slovak government for knowledge society, european affaires, human rights and minorities, as well as the state secretary of the Ministry of Culture Mr. Augustín Jozef Lang.
Mr. President wished all present only the best for the New Year, may their civil and personal wishes come true, that they will feel better as the citizens of the Slovak Republic with remaining all cultural traditions of each national minority or ethnics. The same ideas also presented the First Lady Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová.
Mr. Ivan Hriczko from the Roma minority made a speech for the side of the guests. He appealed for importance of national traditions that are saying where the person comes from and where he belongs to. As a representative of a national minority he stressed the importance of national identity. As he pointed out, Slovaks together with national minorities are creating a joint slovak political nation. |
