President of the Slovak Republic at Celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution
President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič took part in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 1956 revolution in Hungary.
The central celebrations were attended by three monarchs, eighteen presidents, six prime ministers, President of the European Commission José Manuela Barrosa and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
The celebrations started by ceremonial hoisting the flag of the Hungarian Republic at Kossuth Square. The President of the Slovak Republic together with other guests laid flowers at the Memorial Flame of the Victims of 1956.
Afterwards, in the Hungarian Parliament, a Declaration on Freedom was signed to commemorate the year of 1956 in Budapest. The highest Hungarian state officials and representatives of 46 countries were present in the act of signing the Declaration.
