President of the Slovak Republic Received the Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Spain
President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič received Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Spain Miguel Ángel Moratinos.
During their talks, President Ivan Gašparovič mentioned the dynamics of the Slovak economy and its credit Slovakia has also as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. He underlined the fact that the two countries share very close opinions regarding the future of the European Union. Then, the Slovak President appreciated the favourable development of the bilateral relations also at the parliamentary level. At the start of their talks, the Spanish guest remarked that “I have found a very friendly atmosphere in Slovakia, and I believe that Slovakia and Spain have the right preconditions for a successful cooperation.”
Both partners referred also to the issue of the Western Balkans. According to President Ivan Gašparovič, “the KFOR forces cannot leave this region any time soon. Any decision made in favour of either side can damage the other side of the dispute.” Therefore, he promotes avoiding taking any hasty steps which could make the situation in Kosovo even worse.
Regarding the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe, the partners agreed that a failure to adopt the Treaty would be a signal of certain disunity of opinions in the EU. As they said, the Union will need a document in the future on the basis of which it will further function and extend. President Ivan Gašparovič recalled also the need to solve the position of national parliaments against the European Parliament.
