Respect for the victims of a terrorist attack on the Pentagon on 11th September 2001, the Iwo Jima memorial, or tour around the historic center of Washington – also these places visited the First Lady Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová during a two-day visit to Washington with her husband President Ivan Gašparovič. On 8th October 2008 the presidential couple laid a wreath at the monument of Iwo Jima. It is interesting that in this military memorial one of five soldiers is Slovak.

President Bill Tucker and board members of the non-profit organization ´Friends of Slovakia´ later welcomed the presidential couple in the premises of Washington Golf and Country Club. They devoted to the presidential pair a valuable medal and to Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová´s foundation ´Education and Health for Everybody´ a check worth 500,- USD. It appreciated the work of the First Lady, who helps through her foundation those who need it most. As Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová said, "I am very pleased that my work is heard here in the United States. In Slovakia, I have several projects and through them I receive assistance where it is most needed."

Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová visited Washington

The non-profit organization ´Friends of Slovakia´ was founded in 2001. Its aim is to strengthen friendship between the United States and Slovakia. ´Friends of Slovakia´ promote cooperation in economic, business, political or humanitarian area, and seek the deepening of relations between these two nations. For their work thanked also President Ivan Gašparovič: "For Slovakia is your work immense and so we thank you very much."

The presidential couple also visited the compatriots who live in the United States, particularly in and around Washington DC. According to President Ivan Gašparovič it is always nice to come among own people: "In the last 15 years Slovakia has made a great progress. I always look forward to these meetings, which me and my wife positively motivate in our future work. Thank you once again for that we can meet with you."
