One of the possibilities of overcoming ones social and medical handicap is the education. The Slovak Foundation of Silvia Gašparovičová – Education and Health for Everybody decided to open a next education centre as a part of the project 1st Folk Academy in Svidník, a city with a high unemployment rate of nearly 12,54 % and a big Roma population. The biggest problem to employ oneself has not only the Roma minority but also medically handicapped people, long-term unemployed and women of a higher age.

Especially at this group of people – social disabled and medically handicapped – are 2 separate simultaneously realized courses aimed. On 3rd April 2008 begun the education of 10 participants. As Mrs. Silvia Gapšarovičová said, „we open courses aimed at getting skills and education for getting employed or start an own business. The participants will get the basics of PC work, internet, English, accounting and entrepreneuring. With all interested in and selected participants works a psychologist.“

A next intensive course will be aimed at medically handicapped, long-term unemployed women or victims of domestic violence. This course will run for 2 weeks and in Svidník 12 women will take part. Afterwards this course will continue in other crisis centres in Slovakia.

The education centre in Svidník was founded also thanks to the help of the city representatives who donored the city hall facilities. At this occasion Mrs. Silvia Gašparovičová discussed with the city and region representatives the possibilities of cooperation and help for this group. The project 1st Folk Academy was really successful – 80 graduates from Kežmarok, Sobrance, Spišská Belá and Holumnica already absolved the education courses. Almost 70 % of them asserted themselves or started their own business.
