Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič Pays His Last Official Visit to Poland

May 20, 2014

Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič started his official farewell visit to Poland by meeting Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski on Tuesday.
“Relations between Slovakia and Poland, as well as between the people of our countries, have never been better,” the Slovak President said at the beginning of their meeting.
He added that his friendly personal relations with his Polish counterpart genuinely reflected the strategic importance of our bilateral relationships for peace and stability in Central Europe. President Gašparovič firmly believes that the above-standard Slovak-Polish cooperation forms the basis of the successful functioning of the Visegrad Group.

President Komorowski thanked Ivan Gašparovič for his contribution to the development of Polish-Slovak bilateral relations during the ten years of his term in the presidential office.
The two officials also appreciated the level and development of cross-border cooperation. Poland is the third largest trade partner to Slovakia, with a total bilateral turnover of EUR8.1 billion.
The presidents also discussed recent developments in Ukraine. “The situation in Ukraine shows that the old security threats are not history,” the Slovak head of state said. They both agreed that Ukraine would need to have its domestic political conditions stabilised. President Gašparovič reiterated Slovakia was ready to help Ukraine in all areas, adding that the signing of a memorandum on reverse gas deliveries to Ukraine had been the first step in this regard.

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski recalled Poland’s interest in organising a Winter Olympics in Krakow and the Tatras region. According to Ivan Gašparovič, “a joint organisation of the Olympics would bring several benefits to our countries; therefore, Slovakia endorses this idea.”

Ivan Gašparovič also met with Marshal of the Polish Senate Bogdan Borusewicz. They both appreciated the excellent level of Slovak-Polish relations. The key topic on their agenda was the bilateral cooperation in economy and energy.

On the second day of his official visit, the Slovak President visited Gdansk and Krynica Morska.
